NCC: A Youth Organisation
The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is a dynamic and unique youth organization that stands apart from conventional military groups. It’s not a military organization in the traditional sense but rather a voluntary youth organization operating under the purview of the Ministry of Defense.
NCC Curriculum and Strength
NCC’s curriculum encompasses both Common Subjects and Special Subjects, designed to impart valuable skills and knowledge to its members. What began with a humble 20,000 cadets has evolved into the world’s largest youth organization, currently boasting a membership of approximately 13 lakhs.
Underlining its commitment to youth development, NCC welcomed an additional one lakh cadets on August 15, 2020, highlighting its ongoing growth and reach. The organization is led by a Director-General (DG), typically holding the rank of a Lieutenant General or an equivalent position. The HQs of NCC are located in New Delhi, India

The NCC’s motto, “Unity and Discipline,” encapsulates its core values and ideals. It reflects a commitment to instilling not only military discipline but also a sense of unity and purpose among its members. NCC Wings and Divisions
NCC Junior Division/Wing:
The NCC Junior Division/Wing is a segment of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) that is primarily targeted at school students. It aims to introduce and inculcate the values of discipline, leadership, and community service at an early age. Cadets in the Junior Division/Wing are typically from secondary and higher secondary schools. Their NCC training is integrated into their school curriculum, enabling them to participate in various NCC activities while pursuing their regular studies. This division serves as a foundation, preparing young students for potential future involvement in the NCC Senior Division/Wing.
NCC Senior Division/Wing:
The NCC Senior Division/Wing is the college-level counterpart of the NCC, open to college and university students. It offers more advanced training and leadership opportunities compared to the Junior Division/Wing. Cadets in the Senior Division/Wing are responsible for managing and conducting various NCC activities, including camps, drills, and community service projects. This division is designed to further enhance the leadership skills and character development of young adults, instilling in them the qualities of responsibility, teamwork, and service. It provides a bridge between education and military service, offering a unique avenue for personal growth and civic engagement.
Admission in NCC: School and College
Admission into the NCC unfolds at two critical junctures in a student’s life: during school and in college. In schools, NCC Junior Division/Wing welcomes students, while the NCC Senior Division/Wing awaits those stepping into college life. These divisions serve as the building blocks for future leaders.
Three Certificates in NCC
NCC offers three significant certificates, each symbolizing a unique phase in a cadet’s journey:
A Certificate – A two-year training program that lays the foundation of NCC knowledge. Cadets develop a sense of discipline and camaraderie, while honing their leadership skills.
B Certificate – A continuation of the NCC journey, this two-year program delves deeper into advanced training, shaping cadets into responsible and capable leaders.
C Certificate – The pinnacle of NCC training, this one-year program is the ultimate test of a cadet’s dedication and skills, emphasizing leadership, teamwork, and service.
Training in NCC
NCC offers a diversified training approach, encompassing various facets:
Institutional Training – The core of NCC training, it takes place in schools and colleges, fostering discipline, drill, and a sense of responsibility.
Training of General Subjects (ANO) – The training of Additional NCC Officers equips cadets with the knowledge to organize and lead various NCC activities.
Training of Specialized Subjects (PI Staff) – Cadets with specialized skills can further their expertise in areas such as adventure, sports, or social service.
Camp Training – The heart of NCC, these camps immerse cadets in a holistic training experience, involving adventure, field exercises, leadership challenges, and community service.
As cadets progress through these phases, they acquire skills and values that shape them into well-rounded individuals ready to make a positive impact on society. NCC, with its unique combination of academic and military training, stands as a beacon of leadership and service for the youth, empowering them to lead with “Unity and Discipline.”
